Putting It Together

Materials for UArts Precollege Program

Lesson One. Welcome!

I am excited to be joining you on Friday, July 15 and Friday, July 22 for two live masterclasses drawing on ideas from my book The SAVI Singing Actor. Here’s a short welcome video to give you an idea of what you can look forward to. Tomorrow, there’ll be another video in which I’ll discuss the characteristics of great singing acting. Meanwhile, if you’re curious, there’s lots more to be discovered by exploring the pages of this website. And feel free to leave a comment below if you’ve got thoughts or questions to share.

Lesson Two. What makes for a great musical theater performance?

Lesson Three. What is your job as a singing actor?

In Lesson Three, I explore the most important skill every musical theater performer must possess to make great work on the musical stage: The ability to create expressive behavior while singing and coordinate that behavior with the music and lyric of a song.

Live master class #1 – July 15

Lesson Four. What is behavior?

I thought our first live master class was a blast, and I hope you feel like you got something useful from it. The next video lesson recaps some information from the first three lessons and our live class before going deeper into the concept of “behavior.”

Lesson Five. Face and Eyes

Lesson Six. Phrase by Phrase.
